Portas plans accepted by govt

The Government has accepted "virtually all" of the recommendations from retail expert Mary Portas with a multimillion-pound funding package to breathe new life into Britain's ailing high streets.

'Hundreds' of applications to become 'Portas Pilot Towns'

The Government has received "hundreds" of applications from towns across the country to become "Portas Pilot Towns", Housing and Local Government Minister Grant Shapps said.

Among the towns in the running for funding are Hatfield, Preston, Chorley, Hinckley and Morpeth and Penrith.

Under the scheme, the government will award £100,000 to 10 towns or cities to help rejuvenate struggling high street shops.
