The Government has received "hundreds" of applications from towns across the country to become "Portas Pilot Towns", Housing and Local Government Minister Grant Shapps said.
Among the towns in the running for funding are Hatfield, Preston, Chorley, Hinckley and Morpeth and Penrith.
Under the scheme, the government will award £100,000 to 10 towns or cities to help rejuvenate struggling high street shops.
The Democratic presidential candidate may also have shown his cards on his choice of running mate.
